November Meeting – Amendment 4 Update

November 14, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

No right is more precious to the citizen than the right to vote, and no right is more fundamental to the state. A democracy derives its legitimacy from the consent of the governed, and a government that deprives citizens of the right to vote cannot claim to be a functioning democracy.

If the passage of Amendment 4 (with nearly 65% of the vote) raised hopes that Florida could again call itself a democracy, it readily became evident that such hopes were misplaced. Claiming to “implement” (but doing their best to eviscerate) Amendment 4, Republican legislators passed and Gov. DeSantis signed SB 7066, a bill that threatens to require returning citizens to collectively pay hundreds of millions of dollars in fines before they are allowed to register to vote.

Our November meeting will feature a panel of individuals who are working hard to ensure that the promise of Amendment 4 is realized. There is no more important or noble work than what they (and others) are doing. You need to hear from them . . . and learn what you can do to help. I hope you’ll be able to attend
